On the 23rd of October 2021, the Teman Malaysia team came together and organised communal charity work at Rumah Kasih Charity Home in Setapak, a home for Malaysia’s forgotten senior citizens and abandoned patients in government hospitals. The purpose of the event was an effort of committing to our pledge of social responsibility and welfare check for the elderly community. 

Upon arriving, we were met with a warm welcome by the Service Manager of the home, Mr Foong Peng Lam, with whom we’ve been in contact with beforehand. Shortly after, we were introduced to six of the elderly that resided at the home.

Entering into the place, we were surprised by the condition of the home as it was one of the most poorly maintained old folk’s homes we have been to due to the restriction of movements during the COVID-19 pandemic. 

 Without further ado, we began working on removing a termite-infested wooden rack that could be considered harmful to the environment. Apart from that, we set up mouse traps around affected areas of the home to deal with rat infestation around the area, cleaned the house refrigerator for better food hygiene, cleared their wardrobes, wiped the windows among many other activities. 

Come lunch break, we sat down with Mr Foong and the rest of the elderly to have lunch while engaging with Mr Foong to understand deeper the background of the charity home. We were moved deeply by the stories told. 

The event was a sweet success. We were overjoyed that we contributed to improving the living condition of the senior citizens at the home. Before parting our ways, Mr Foong expressed his heartfelt gratitude to the Teman team for choosing Rumah Kasih Charity Home as our beneficiary. It is our duly responsibility to come back and do another round of welfare checks soon. 

To end this post, we earnestly call the public, especially house cleaning service providers to come together and help improve the condition of the home for the betterment of the elderly’s quality of life (QOL). 

To better help, donations from the public are very much encouraged. The charity home needs funds for the building rental, utility bills, food, elderly care provisions, medical items such as wheelchairs, diapers etc and allowance for volunteers who do the housekeeping.
